We all know that the standard capacity of a wine bottle is 750ml, so whether it’s a Bourgogne Wine Bottle, a Bordeauc Wine Bottle or a Mosel Wine Bottle, the capacity is the same despite the different shapes.
We are used to 750ml wine bottles. But what about the whisky glass bottle, which is usually 700ml?
Although glass blowing was born in the ancient Roman period, glass bottles were expensive at that time, so alcoholic beverages were mostly stored in clay jars, including whiskey and wine. It wasn’t until the 18th century that cork technology became commonplace and wine led the way in glass bottling. However, at that time, most wine bottles were 600-800ml, which was the approximate volume that workers could blow out in one gulp. The standard wine bottle was born mainly because a barrel of wine could be filled to 750ml * 300 bottles, 12 bottles per case, or 25 cases.
After the end of World War II, standardized production on a large scale became the choice of many businesses. So, many liquors followed the example of wine and used 750ml as the common bottle size, which is exactly 1/5 of a gallon in the British system, and now we sometimes hear the words A Fifth of Whisky, A Fifth of Rum, A Fifth of Vodka and so on, referring to the 750ml capacity of whisky, rum and vodka.
By 1970, the United Kingdom, the European Union and Canada had all introduced the standard 750ml bottle. However, the United States was a maverick and insisted on using 757ml bottles until 1979, so you will find that the majority of whiskeys produced in the 1970s and 1980s were generally 750ml in size.
Why has the whisky gone from 750ml to 700ml again? The reason is simple – to raise the price. On the premise that the price remains the same, the volume has been reduced, which means that the price per unit volume of alcohol has also increased.
In 1993, the European Union introduced regulations to determine the 700ml as the standard volume, so most of the world’s whisky bottles have become 700ml.
